Picture This: Your Instagrams as Nail Art

It should come as no surprise that something with over 17 million Instagram tags has a big following. Nail art has been taking the boring mani to new bold, creative heights for years now. So when another nail company comes along, what makes them stick? Well, having an awesome app that allows you to turn your own pics into nail art should do the trick. NailSnaps is where it’s at. Gone are the days of smelly nail polish and ruined nail beds. NailSnaps makes an impression without the hassle and leaves you with an Instagram-worthy mani. We nerded out over nail talk with co-founder and CEO of NailSnaps, Angel Anderson. After reading this, you’ll want to snap the app right up so you can have your hands on one-of-a-kind mani magic.

CREATIV Magazine: First things first, what brought NailSnaps to life?

NailSnaps: I love nail art, but I don’t like sitting around watching paint dry! I’ve tried every brand of nail wrap, but I’m always frustrated because the quality isn’t that great and the generic designs are so underwhelming. I figured there must be an app that would let me turn my Instagrams into nail art, but there wasn’t, so I decided to create NailSnaps.

How will NailSnaps keep the nail art world as fresh as a good-looking manicure?

We’re working to roll out new social features, subscriptions, and deeper partnerships with brands in the near future. When you think about nails as a canvas for whatever you love, you realize that the possibilities are really endless (sports teams, television and film characters, bands, graphic novels, and more). We’re starting to work with brands and influencers to bring various fandoms to life via nail art.

Do you think your company has a hand in the creative world?

The whole reason we created NailSnaps was to foster creativity and personal expression.

Nail wraps are great for the convenience but we want people to be able to wear personalized looks. Before, people who wanted custom nail art had to pay a lot of money. NailSnaps revolutionizes the process and makes it possible for anyone to create nail art simply by snapping a photo.

The rotatable, resizable stencil in the NailSnaps app lets you lock parts of an image onto each nail so you can tell a story using all the nails together to create a larger image, or repeat part of the image on all fingers. The app makes it easy, fast, and fun to make tons of killer designs and rock your custom look in minutes with no dry time. Fun, easy personalization is literally at your fingertips.

If you had to pick favorites, what’s the coolest design you’ve seen created on the app?

One customer is creating gorgeous abstract designs by snapping photos of her 5-year-old’s artwork. Another person has been making elaborate zentangles with Sharpies and turning those drawings into NailSnaps.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane. What’s your best ‘remember that one time’ story?

We can never be seen with less than stellar nails and since we’re always on the go, we’ve discovered that we can apply NailSnaps ANYWHERE! We’ve applied them on planes, trains, and in the back of swerving cars on the way to meetings. A woman in an elevator saw me get on with 2 nails left to put on, and by the time we reached the 20th floor, my mani was complete. Needless to say, she wouldn’t let me get out of the elevator until she downloaded the app.

Every startup starts somewhere, what was your low point and how did it make you rise?

During the first week of our Kickstarter, we only raised $5k. We needed to hit our goal of $43k with less than 3 weeks to go. It was really stressful, so we doubled our efforts with our networks to get press. In the end, we secured over 62 press mentions and our Kickstarter was successfully funded. Being a startup founder is a daily roller coaster of emotions but the key is to stay focused and find a way to make things work.

Imagine you’re writing the job description for your job, what skills do you need to succeed?
Sarah (co-founder) and I are both resourceful, and resilient. Everything we’ve done up to this point has given us skills that have proven useful. A college job as a telemarketer helped me get comfortable pitching to investors. Being a senior user experience designer gave me the ability to create an app that made the iOS App Store’s Best New Apps list. Sarah’s media expertise is helping us prepare for our official roll out of the Android version. Every job and challenge we’ve taken on has helped us prepare to make NailSnaps a success.

You’re all about keeping it local. Why?

We produce and ship from our magical mani factory right here in Southern California so we can ensure the highest quality product. Plus, we can see with our own eyes that the people who print and fulfill each order are working in healthy conditions and earning a living wage. With all the current labor issues around the health and welfare of nail salon workers, we want to make NailSnaps a positive alternative that customers can feel good about supporting.

Goal time. What do you want NailSnaps to accomplish?

The beauty of the individual is so important to us. We’re working to build NailSnaps into a company with lasting value that plays a positive role in people’s lives. It’ll be the world’s best way to create, share and wear nail art.
