Pop! Goes the Boring Greeting Card

You can spend hours picking out that perfect greeting card and still come up a bit empty handed. So many cards that all look the same. Enter lovepop. While on a graduate trip to Vietnam, John Wise and Wombi Rose’s love affair with intricate art began. Now, their greeting card company lovepop is taking the present card to new creative heights, and showing you that it’s what’s inside that counts. From diving in on Shark Tank to pushing the boundaries of human connection, they laid all their cards on the table for this candid chat. (Lucky us.)  And one thing’s for sure, they’re popping like it’s hot.

CREATIV: How would you describe what you do to a complete stranger?

Lovepop: My first reaction is to show them a card.  The magic moment of lovepop is always the first time you open one and the intricate sculpture emerges from that seemingly ordinary card.  That moment generally reminds people of someone particular in their life that they’ve been meaning to reach out to.  So when I go on to describe that I spend my days helping people create unexpected moments of delight for the people they care about, it makes perfect sense.

You have a background in naval architecture and marine engineering, what made you pop into (and stay) in the world of cards?

John and I are engineers at heart.  We think in 3D, we’re constantly scribbling new designs on whiteboards, and we’re always dreaming up crazy things we can build.  When we first discovered the art of kirigami on a school trip through Asia, our eyes were opened to an amazing set of possibilities.  All the things we could create.  Lovepop started as a passion for design and transformed itself into a business through the passionate reactions of our early, early customers.

What makes a lovepop card different from all the other cards out there?

A lovepop is unique because it’s such a special gift to receive.  Rather than traditional cards that might get tossed or thrown in the shoebox or desk drawer, a lovepop is displayed on the mantle, the dining room table, or your desk.  Some of our customers have even made them into mobiles!  But even more than that magic moment, what makes lovepop unique is the incredible sense of mission in our organization to help our customers do something unexpected for the people they care about.

To say the inside is a work of art is an understatement, how are these delicate creations brought to life?

Every design starts its life on a whiteboard or as a pencil sketch.  Each sculpture is then modeled in advanced engineering software, the same software that John and I used to design ships and boats in our prior life.  After the renderings are complete, we cut the pieces on precision laser cutters and assemble them by hand.  Each sculpture is then carefully placed and glued into the card and tested several times before packaging.

2016 and beyond, what are you working on and what are you most looking forward to?

Lovepop is all about creating unique messengers for human stories.  We believe humans are inherently social and seek to express themselves in meaningful ways to others and that we respond best to expressions that are unexpected, tangible, and personal.  Our goal is to become known as the best way to go above and beyond to do something special for someone you care about.

Big picture, what mark do you want to leave on the world?

My life’s purpose is to make pigs fly.  To encourage you to attempt things that everyone doesn’t believe possible.  I hope to be that spark that makes things you never expected to happen happen.  Whether that’s graduating high school, or going to the moon.
